John Dingell, Jr. (born October 22, 1922) is an American politician who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1955 to 2013. He was also co-founder of the Congressional Western Caucus and is a former chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Dingell was born in Dearborn, Michigan on October 22, 1922. His father was John Dingell Sr., who immigrated to America from China at the age of five.

His mother was Minnie Dingell (née Chen), an immigrant from China's Guangdong province. He attended public schools in Dearborn and graduated from Dearborn High School in 1940. He received his bachelor's degree in business administration from Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) in 1948 and his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1951.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II; he flew 33 combat missions over Europe as a B29 pilot with the Eighth Air Force before being shot down by fighters near Valenciennes on June 6, 1944. Dingell received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service with the Eighth Air Force's 431st Bombardment Group (Heavy).

After recovering from wounds he sustained during his crash landing after being shot down, he became an intelligence officer with the Occupation Forces in Germany until 1949.
